SKETCH OF THE ARCHES AT TWO O’CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON

Esta pequeña tabla refleja un lugar familiar, pero un tiempo desconocido. Los arcos del Balcón de Europa, las macetas de gitanillas que lo adornan y el paisaje anfibio que enmarcan son de sobra conocidos por todos los visitantes. Pero esa quietud diurna, en la que los arcos aparecen libres de movimiento, como si se tratara de un daguerrotipo, es patrimonio exclusivo de los nerjeños, que aquí permanecen cuando el vendaval humano del verano se retire.

This small table reflects a familiar place, but an unknown time. The arches of the Balcón de Europa, the pots of gitanillas that decorate it and the amphibious landscape they frame are well known to all visitors. But that daytime stillness, in which the arches appear free of movement, as if it were a daguerreotype, is the exclusive patrimony of the Nerjeños, who remain here when the human gale of summer leaves.
